This Advent song gives voice to weariness with war, anger and injustice, and channels it into a wake-up call to notice God’s presence and join in shunning the darkness. Drawing on images of dawn, light and the hope of Christ’s coming, it invites congregations to lament honestly while choosing watchful, active hope. It works well on the First Sunday of Advent in Year A, for services that focus on watching and waiting, or in any setting that longs for peace and a new beginning.

Are you wearied by the darkness?
Exhausted by the pain?
Are you searching for an answer
to when Christ will come again?

Oh wake up to God’s presence
and seek God’s heavenly light,
be part of shunning darkness,
God’s dawn will end the night.

Are you weeping at the warring?
Heartbroken by each feud?
Are you wondering when the weapons
will be used to harvest food?

Oh wake up to God’s presence
and seek God’s heavenly light,
be part of shunning darkness,
God’s dawn will end the night.

Are you tired of all the anger?
Frightened by its increase?
Are you longing for the morning
when the world wakes up to peace?

O wake up to God’s presence
and seek God’s heavenly light,
be part of shunning darkness,
God’s dawn will end the night.
