The Readings at a Glance
Isaiah 35:1–10
Isaiah paints a picture of renewal bursting out where only barrenness had seemed possible. The wilderness blooms, fear gives way to courage, and all that has been weighed down begins to rejoice. It is a vision of God’s saving work as healing, restoration, and joyful homecoming.
Psalm 146:5–10
This psalm celebrates the God who is faithful, just, and deeply attentive to those the world too easily overlooks. God feeds the hungry, frees the oppressed, and lifts up those who are bowed down, giving us a picture of divine love that is practical, liberating, and full of hope.
Luke 1:46b–55
Mary’s song is full of joy, strength, and holy upheaval. She praises the God who notices the lowly, unsettles the powerful, and fills the hungry with good things. It is a song of hope rooted in God’s justice – the kind of hope that expects the world to be turned towards mercy and restoration.
James 5:7–10
James encourages patience, steadiness, and courage when life feels hard or uncertain. Like waiting for the earth to bear fruit, this is not passive resignation but hopeful endurance – a call to stay rooted, not lose heart, and trust that God is at work even when change feels slow.
Matthew 11:2–11
John the Baptist, now in prison, sends word to ask whether Jesus really is the one they have been waiting for. Jesus answers by pointing to lives being changed – good news proclaimed, healing happening, hope taking root among those most in need. It is a reading about expectation, doubt, and the kind of Messiah who is recognised not by spectacle, but by restoration and mercy.
Song
A reflective Advent song that holds doubt and grief with honesty, trusting that faithful waiting can become hope as we keep asking Christ to come close and reveal God’s reign.
Can all we do is wait?
We thought we would be stronger,
confident and fearless,
bold to face each challenge.
But here we are,
with what we have:
doubtful, afraid —
no certainty,
just the question:
Are you the One?
Are you the One?
Come close again.
Are you the One?
Reveal your reign.
Are you the One?
Let us rejoice in your coming.
Can all we do is wait?
If waiting is what love needs,
in faithful honesty,
bringing every question,
then here we are –
not giving up,
watching in hope,
the candle lit,
longing for you.
Are you the One?
Come close again.
Are you the One?
Reveal your reign.
Are you the One?
Are you the One?
Let us rejoice in your coming.
Can all we do is wait?
We will not call this easy.
We will not rush past grief.
We will come as we are.
Hold us in doubt.
Keep us in hope.
Show us your reign.
Help us proclaim:
You are the One.
You are the One.
You are the One.
Come close again.
You are the One.
Reveal your reign.
You are the One.
Let us rejoice in your coming.
