This song draws on the Beatitudes in Luke’s Gospel, singing blessing over people who are poor, hungry, weeping or rejected for following Christ. It holds together honest naming of hardship with the promise of joy, justice and God’s coming reign, making it especially fitting for the Sixth Sunday after Epiphany in Year C. It works well as a response to the Gospel reading, a sung refrain during intercessions, or a moment of blessing for those on the margins.

Blessed are you who are poor,
for yours is the realm of God.

Blessed are you who are hungry,
for you will be filled.

Blessed are you who have tears,
for you will laugh with joy.

Blessed are you when you’re hated
for following the way of Christ.

Rejoice on that day and leap for joy,
for surely your reward is great.
