Can All We Do Is Wait? is an Advent song for honest waiting, echoing John the Baptist’s question: “Are you the One?” It holds doubt and grief without rushing them, and turns the refrain into a shared prayer for Christ to come close and reveal God’s reign. Use it as a gathering or response song, or alongside candle-lighting, letting the final verse move gently from question to hope-filled confession.

Can all we do is wait?
We thought we would be stronger,
confident and fearless,
bold to face each challenge.
But here we are,
with what we have:
doubtful, afraid —
no certainty,
just the question:
Are you the One?

Are you the One?
Come close again.
Are you the One?
Reveal your reign.
Are you the One?
Let us rejoice in your coming.

Can all we do is wait?
If waiting is what love needs,
in faithful honesty,
bringing every question,
then here we are –
not giving up,
watching in hope,
the candle lit,
longing for you.

Are you the One?
Come close again.
Are you the One?
Reveal your reign.
Are you the One?
Are you the One?
Let us rejoice in your coming.

Can all we do is wait?
We will not call this easy.
We will not rush past grief.
We will come as we are.
Hold us in doubt.
Keep us in hope.
Show us your reign.
Help us proclaim:
You are the One.
You are the One.

You are the One.
Come close again.
You are the One.
Reveal your reign.
You are the One.
Let us rejoice in your coming.
