Inclusive, justice-shaped worship resources for the Revised Common Lectionary – prayers, liturgy, creative ideas and accessible reflections that connect scripture with everyday life.
The Readings at a Glance
Isaiah 2:1–5
Isaiah offers a vision of God’s future in which people are drawn towards peace, justice, and a better way of living together. Weapons are turned into tools for growth, and the reading invites us to imagine a world reshaped by God’s wisdom rather than by fear, violence, or rivalry.
Psalm 122
A psalm of joy at the journey into worship, filled with gladness, prayer, and longing for peace. It holds together celebration and responsibility, calling for the wellbeing of the city and for a shared life rooted in justice and wholeness.
Romans 13:11–14
Paul speaks with urgency: this is the moment to wake up and live differently. Advent begins not with cosy sentiment, but with a call to leave behind what diminishes life and to be clothed instead with the way of Christ – a way shaped by love, honesty, and readiness.
Matthew 24:36–44
Jesus speaks of watchfulness in the face of uncertainty. No one knows the timing, so the call is not to panic or speculate, but to stay awake to God – living with attentiveness, faithfulness, and a readiness for the new thing God may be bringing.
Song
An Advent song for weary justice-seekers, naming darkness and conflict while calling us to wake up to God’s dawning light and peace.
Are you wearied by the darkness?
Exhausted by the pain?
Are you searching for an answer
to when Christ will come again?
Oh wake up to God’s presence
and seek God’s heavenly light,
be part of shunning darkness,
God’s dawn will end the night.
Are you weeping at the warring?
Heartbroken by each feud?
Are you wondering when the weapons
will be used to harvest food?
Oh wake up to God’s presence
and seek God’s heavenly light,
be part of shunning darkness,
God’s dawn will end the night.
Are you tired of all the anger?
Frightened by its increase?
Are you longing for the morning
when the world wakes up to peace?
O wake up to God’s presence
and seek God’s heavenly light,
be part of shunning darkness,
God’s dawn will end the night.
